While you watch it, you get this feeling that you're looking at a string of clichés encountered so often in the genre; then you realise that the clichés became clichés only after being copied from this particular film, and that they were so widely copied because this film was so great. The depth and complexity of James Stewart's performance is the star here, but for me, film noir auteur Anthony Mann's textured, high contrast black and white photography is a runner up, especially in the night scenes, which have the haunting and three dimensional glowing quality of the best film noir classics.
The final battle between good and bad brothers, high atop a series of jutting rock canyons, is now legendary among western buffs. Quick paced story and and well written. My favorite movie genre is the western, it's really the only movie genre that is of American origin. They did a great job with the demonstration of marksmanship at the beginning of the movie, but it only served to make the lousy rock destroying shootout at the end of the film that much more disappointing. With .38 Special ammo it is suitable for small game and pest control and with .357 Magnum ammunition it will be well suited to hunt deer sized game. Out of IMDb's ten star system, I have given it a seven. The movie would have been a lot better if they went further with that idea and maybe downplayed Shelly Winter's role. This is a very durable finish but it is not as pretty as case coloring. | Rating: 5/5 A demanding director with ambitions to greatness, Mann eventually graduated to epic films in the early 60s, but for his Stewart films, he molded somewhat generic scripts (most notably by Borden Chase) into films with a very strong thematic coherence. His themes of psychological unrest and past dictating present faintly underlie this tall tale of good and bad men chasing after a fabled gun, but they starkly emerge in a vignette about a husband's cowardice and failed attempt at atonement, and are defined in Stewart's conversations with sidekick Millard Mitchell.
Soon-to-be-blacklisted Will Geer is a great Wyatt Earp, and later Mann regulars Steve Brodie, John McIntire, Chuck Roberson and Jay C. Flippen contribute excellent turns. This straight-stocked, 16 1?8-inch, round-barreled, blued saddle gun can be had in either .44-40 or .45 Colt caliber, with the short-stroke action, as well as an elk leather butt cover and lever wrap. It’s a sight to behold! And anyone who likes lever action rifles will like the new Winchester Model 1873. The story details Stewart's pursuit of the rifle and a certain man through the film. One scene in particular serves to explain his attitude: Mitchell's telling of Stewart's motivation to Shelley Winters, which is interrupted by the climactic gunfight that soon enough reveals all. Winchester has gone back into the history pages and revived one of their most iconic rifles – the Winchester Model 1873, sometimes simply referred to as the Model 73 Short Rifle).
(I would be remiss in not recognizing cinematographer William H. Daniels's contribution, particularly his superlative day-for-night, open-range photography.) First, it has Indians in the plot and there is some attempt to treat them as three dimensional characters with legitimate grievances. |, August 23, 2020 Well worth watching, you will like it unless you really hate older western genre movies in general.
The Sig Sauer P238 was the first .380 ACP BUG to grace my gun safe, a welcomed addition to the 9mm polymers, .38 SPL revolvers, and .45 ACP 1911s. The Anthony Mann - Borden Chase style is unmistakable. Just as mountains, caves, and rapids had to be accounted for in The Naked Spur, here a gunfight occurs amidst the loose rocks and boulders of a small mountain, a physical obstruction that fatalistically determines the roles of victor and victim between two equally skilled sharpshooters. The story has a prime example of the 'binary' genre character. WINCHESTER '73 also introduces a darker side of Jimmy Stewart that wasn't present in his earlier work.
With some noble exceptions (eg Wellman, Hawks), the Western was healthily free of neuroses or real anxiety.
(In one wonderful bit, two future stars - Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis - play an Indian chief and a U.S. cavalry soldier - during a well staged pitched-battle. One was no good... never was any good. Winchester 73 gets credit from many critics for bringing back the western after WWII. Taylor’s Slicked Up ’73s Unique lever-action rifles and carbines keep the 1873 Winchester Model’s legacy alive and well.
We follow the exploits of a prize rifle as it precipitates violence in a cross-section of frontier characters. First Stewart/Mann Teaming a CLASSIC! The carbine not only has the front sight rounded for ease of quick removal from the saddle scabbard, but also the rear sight dovetail is filled, so the rear sight or straight edged front sight will not hang up when withdrawn during the lightning fast horseback competition (important factors in mounted rifle competition).
I would have given it three stars. Read on to find out. We want to hear what you have to say but need to verify your email. The Winchester 73 in all its glory.
After more than a year's worth of use, where do I stand on the P238? Nor does he care to spell out the plot in dialogue, relying on the actors' eyes or a well-chosen image to convey the stakes. (Photo credit: Guns Holsters and Gear). Winchester '73 is great for star watching. It has a realistic edge, and the story has good pacing and steady tension right the way through. Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson, teen heartthrobs in later years, have brief but good roles.
The deep, dark bluing of the receiver and barrel is shiny but not glossy. After diligently reading the owners manual; which everyone should do after purchasing a firearm, running a swab down the barrel, peeling the Winchester decal off the barrel, with two boxes of 38s, I headed to the range.
