The script uses the thriller format to lock together the personal, the social and the political in what adds up to not only a darkly ambiguous thriller but a portrait of an isolated community, and a whole society, in flux: a marshland. The scene with the soaked (and soaking) marsh, is a perfect crescendo. Expansive areal shots and tiny details come together to build a setting that feels all-encompassing. The two protagonistic policemen in the center of our attention, both have a past to contend with although during differing circumstances, and there's little cooperation going on.
